The Beaumont’s New Look

September 15, 2021 by Allison Reiber DiLiegro

After a long wait, The Beaumont opens its doors again – and it’s looking better than ever. Returning guests will find the same Art Deco elegance, thanks to the rich collection of vintage paintings, the moody lighting by night, the iconic checkerboard floor, and the apartment-style suites. But now, there’s even more to discover: The Mayfair hotel used its 18-month closure to add new layers to the experience, with the help of leading New York-based designer Thierry W. Despont, London-based architects Reardon Smith, and a brand new chef.

We’ll start with the iconic Le Magritte Bar, now with a more intimate location and a seductive redesign. Inspired by the American-style bars that landed in 1920s Paris and London, this is the kind of place one could imagine spotting the likes of Ernest Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald cozying up to the bar. In its new iteration, Le Magritte has just 30 seats and specializes in bourbons, American whiskies, and classic cocktails. The interiors feature European fiddleback cherrywood and a leather-topped ebony bar, all beneath the namesake painting by Magritte that hangs above the bar.

The former location of the Le Magritte bar is now home to the new Gatsby’s Room, a plush lounge space with elegant mahogany tub chairs, bespoke walnut-framed sofas, and live music on the baby grand. It’s an atmospheric setting for a classic British afternoon tea with a dash of American flair. Or, stop in for a light lunch, dinner, or a nightcap while the piano plays. Just outside, the lobby has a lighter feel with gold-on-ivory Pierre Frey curtains and playful velour upholstery.

The glamorous Colony Grill Room, with its 1920s New York-inspired decor and rich red banquettes, is now helmed by Head Chef Ben Boeynaems. This year, Chef Boeynaems was listed as a finalist for National Chef of the Year. His menu still features transatlantic classics, such as steaks, seafood, shrimp cocktail, and salads, but has been updated to focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

With the reopening, The Beaumont introduces al fresco dining for the first time. The new terrace restaurant features classic rattan armchairs and cafe tables, all surrounded by leafy gardens. The menu will feature inspired coffees, snacks, and cocktails all day. When the weather gets chilly, the space will be covered and heated.

Attention was also paid to the spa, which now boasts a fourth treatment room and an expanded gym. While much is new at The Beaumont, this has been a gentle, thoughtful evolution. Thanks to the Old World elegance, the convivial atmosphere, and many of the original staff, that special something remains.
