Introducing L’Andana in Tuscany

A historic sprawling estate built during the Medici era, L’Andana is a stunning Tuscan villa hotel set in the heart of the Maremma countryside, a remote coastal region dotted with rolling hills, olive trees, and rows of vineyards. Just 7 km from the Tyrrhenian coastline and the picturesque ancient town of Castiglione della Pescaia, L’Andana is both a bucolic countryside retreat and a beach lover’s paradise.
Originally owned by Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine, the property and its surrounding lands have an incredibly rich history, something that the Moretti family loved and made sure to preserve when they bought the estate in 2000.
Four years later, internationally renowned French chef Alain Ducasse fell in love with this slice of Tuscan paradise as well, and so he joined with the Morettis to form what is now known as L’Andana. This luxury five-star resort is also a proud member of Leading Hotels of the World.
Beyond the long driveway lines with tall cypresses and pines, L’Andana is made up of two main buildings, the Villa and the House, along with sprawling land that includes multiple gardens and a beautiful outdoor pool that overlooks the rolling hills of Maremma. Against the spectacular landscape, the neutral tones and calming palette of the simple-yet-chic interiors are a perfect contrast.
Of the property’s 61 accommodations (a mix of rooms, suites, apartments and villas), there are nine rooms located in the Villa itself and 24 in the “Fattoria”, the hotel’s most modern wing. The two buildings are joined together by a sun-lit “Jardin d’hiver”, a cosy space made of wrought iron and glass where the hotel reception and lobby are located. The rooms – whose size spans from 40 to 92 m2- are decorated with Tuscan-style furniture and decor, warm colors, and Florentine silks, and all were tastefully furbished by renowned architect Ettore Mocchetti. Most of the rooms have a cozy stone fireplace, gold and yellow-hued fabrics, and views overlooking the sprawling Tuscan countryside, with the relaxing scent of lavender wafting up from the lush gardens below.
Situated in Casa Badiola, there are 14 suites (40 m2-70m2), which offer a stylish living area, a kitchenette, and terrace overlooking sweeping hillside views of olive groves. At Il Granaio, its newest addition, there are 10 suites, which can be converted into 5 two-bedroom apartment, perfectly designed for a take-over with full Concierge services. These new elegant suites reflect a bold country chic look with a brighter and more contemporary color palette and overlook the large patio and garden, surrounding a private pool. These rooms are a great choice for families, as they can be connected to create a large apartment with a fully equipped kitchenette. The other eight suites are located on the second floor can also combined into 4 two-bedroom apartments and offer a breathtaking panorama over the vineyards and the long drive lined with centuries-old cypress trees.
The property’s exclusive private villa, La Scuderia, is a 300 m² two-story residence with a private pool, sprawling garden, four guest rooms, a bright kitchen and living area and a shaded porch that offers superb views over the Tuscan landscape. This was the former stable of the Grand Duke’s hunting reserve, and it has been lovingly transformed into a delightful hideaway filled with comfortable furnishings and beautifully preserved original features from the eighteenth century.
L’Andana attracts spa and wellness lovers from all over the world thanks to its peaceful surroundings, calming atmosphere and incredibly luxurious Espa spa that boasts four treatment rooms, two thermal spas, a Turkish bath, a mineral-rich heated Vitality Pool, and a thalassotherapy pool. The spa menu offers a range of classic treatments, including body wraps and scrubs, massages, facials, and day-long holistic spa programs designed to relax the body and rejuvenate the spirit.
The property’s two gastronomic offerings are La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini and La Villa restaurant, both of which serve traditional tuscan fare with a slight modern twist. The more-formal, Michelin-starred Trattoria is only open for dinner, and is set in what was once the original estate’s ancient granary. With its terra-cotta floors, exposed brick, wooden beams, and open kitchen with a wood-burning oven, it doesn’t get much more traditional Tuscan. The Trattoria has an atmosphere that is at once cozy and elegant, with large windows looking out onto the Maremma landscape and vineyards, as well as an outdoor terrace overlooking the vegetable gardens. Tuscan-born chef Enrico Bartolini whips up modern Mediterranean dishes using fresh, local produce, herbs, vegetables, and olive oil from the estate’s own gardens.
The wine cellar is particularly impressive, with over 600 labels, including wines produced by the Moretti family’s cellars: Bellavista, Contadi Castaldi, Selle & Mosca, Terruzzi, Petra and Acquagiusta.
The more-casual La Villa restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, though breakfast is the true star of the show here. Guests will sit in a garden lined with aromatic orange trees and enjoy morning delicacies like freshly baked doughnuts, fluffy orange-flower brioches, piping hot currant buns, rich cheesecake, platters of local meats and cheeses, fresh mozzarella, and seasonal vegetables. The homemade jams are also not to be missed. For lunch and dinner, La Villa serves traditional Tuscan dishes like bronzino fillet on a bed of salt, Florentine-style steak, and fresh tagliatelle with Chianina ragout.
L’Andana also offers catered gourmet picnics, to be enjoyed either in the lush Tuscan countryside or seaside on the sandy shores of the Tyrrhenian sea.
Amenities at L’Andana include an outdoor pool and jacuzzi overlooking the gardens, a golf driving range, a tennis court, and mountain bikes. Italian cooking classes are offered by the hotel’s talented chef, as are wine classes concentrating on the territory of Montalcino. The Tyrrhenian coast, along with its stunning beaches including the famed Punta Ala, is just 15 minutes away, and offers gorgeous beach clubs, boat excursions to nearby coves, and exploration of seaside towns like Castiglione della Pescaia. There are also winery tours and tastings offered at the nearby Tenuta La Badiola.
